Imphal: A two-day regional convention on child rights wrapped up Saturday in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh. The event drew all eight State Commissions for Protection of Child Rights from across the North East to coordinate on protection strategies. Chief Minister Pema Khandu opened the event on July 31 and August 1. He pledged state support and asked for the summit to become a yearly rotation among the states.
Manipur delegation leader Keisam Pradipkumar detailed the plight of 30,000 children displaced by three years of ethnic violence in his home state. He pushed for regional help on education, mental health, and rehab. Mizoram commission chair Jimmy Laltlanmawia added that refugee influxes from Myanmar and Manipur create risks like child trafficking and drug abuse.
Delegates tackled digital addiction, cyber safety, and protecting gender non-conforming students. APSCPCR Chairperson Anya Ratan introduced the Tawang Declaration to build a formal regional cooperation network. This document asks the federal government and National Commission for Protection of Child Rights to boost oversight. NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo served as the final guest. He told attendees, "The importance of coordinated regional action in addressing the evolving child protection challenges" remains the primary goal for the North Eastern Region.
