Guwahati: A tanker carrying formalin crashed Thursday near Jatinga Bridge in Assam, dumping the toxic chemical into the Jatinga River. The wreck occurred around 4 p.m. on National Highway 27 along the Haflong-Silchar route. Tanker NL01A 3886 was hauling the cargo from Namrup to Tripura when two chambers ruptured, sending the spill into a nearby stream that fed directly into the river.

District officials acted fast. The District Disaster Management Authority warned residents living between Jatinga Bridge and Harangajao to avoid the water entirely. Do not drink it. Do not cook with it. Do not feed it to your livestock.

Exposure to the chemical poses health risks to people, animals, and the local ecosystem. The agency warned that the water is off limits for at least two days. Officials are now on the scene to contain the leak and monitor the river. The authority has "urged residents to strictly follow the advisory until further notice" while clean-up crews work to minimize the damage.
