Centre Reviews Proposal to Elevate NEIGRIHMS to National Status

Shillong: The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is weighing a proposal to elevate NEIGRIHMS to an Institute of National Importance. This move follows a direct petition from MLA AL Hek. Union Health Minister JP Nadda confirmed the ministry is currently looking into the request.

Official channels are reviewing the plan. The state government wants the upgrade to drive better research, lift academic standards, and unlock federal funding. Nadda stated, "The matter is currently being reviewed by the concerned division."

Success hinges on this internal review. If granted, the facility gains autonomy and greater access to central resources. The ministry remains the final gatekeeper for the status change.
