Guwahati: The central government has established a high-level committee to investigate demographic shifts occurring across India. Chaired by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Prakash Prabhakar Naolekar, the panel is tasked with evaluating how illegal immigration and other unnatural factors influence population patterns. Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the initiative, citing concerns that these shifts represent a significant challenge to the nation's stability and future security.

This development follows a previous warning from Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day address. The Prime Minister described the alteration of demographics, particularly in border regions, as a potential threat to national security and a conspiracy to destabilize the country.

Regional leaders, including Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, have strongly supported the move. Both leaders emphasized that northeastern states have long grappled with the consequences of shifting demographics. Sarma noted that the committee is a visionary step toward protecting indigenous rights, cultural heritage, and social balance. Similarly, Singh praised the government for its decisive action, noting that the findings will be instrumental in addressing long-standing concerns about identity and security in the Northeast.
