Guwahati: A six-member federal team hit the ground in Assam on July 10. They came to audit the ruin left by back-to-back floods in 2025 and 2026. The group met with Chief Secretary Ravi Kota to talk shop. The stakes are high. They split their ranks to cover more ground.
Praveen Kumar Rai of the Ministry of Home Affairs led one group through Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, and Biswanath. The second group checked out Cachar before heading to Chirang and Bajali. They gathered intel on ruined property, smashed infrastructure, and lost livelihoods.
Representatives from the Army, Air Force, and NDRF sat in on the review. NHAI, the railways, and the Food Corporation of India joined too. Local officials dialed in via video call. The state government promised a final report once the monsoon finally breaks.
The visitors want action. They told state leaders to tap the State Disaster Mitigation Fund for permanent fixes. Their plan calls for dredging small rivers to boost water flow. They also pushed to restore local wetlands. Officials said the state must "utilise the State Disaster Mitigation Fund" to better manage the deluge.
