Guwahati: The Central Bureau of Investigation arrested a Senior Section Engineer with the Northeast Frontier Railway on June 14 following an alleged bribery incident in Silchar. The official, who works in the Carriage and Wagon Department, was caught while accepting a payment of Rs 20,000 from a local contractor.

The arrest stems from a complaint filed on June 13 regarding an outstanding payment of Rs 20 lakh for completed project work. According to investigators, the engineer demanded the bribe as a condition for clearing the pending bill. Officials noted that the payment represented one percent of the total outstanding amount.

A spokesperson for the agency stated, "The agency has said that investigations are continuing and additional inquiries are being conducted to determine the full extent of the matter."

Following the arrest, CBI teams conducted searches at the engineer's residence to secure further evidence. The accused was scheduled to appear before a court in Guwahati as the investigation proceeds.
