Guwahati: Kamil Hussain Mazumdar is dead. The eight-year-old boy drowned July 11 in a deep, water-filled trench dug for the Bharatmala highway project in Cachar, Assam. He went missing around noon near his home in Tarinipur Part-I. Family and neighbors searched the area for two hours before finding his body in the construction pit.
Doctors at the hospital declared the boy dead on arrival. The tragedy ignited fury among locals who claim the project site is a death trap. They say the trenches lack basic warning signs, railings, or barricades to stop people from falling in.
Villagers demand answers. They claim previous complaints about the lack of site security went ignored by project bosses. Residents allege that multiple animals already died in these same pits before this child lost his life. One local resident noted the ongoing danger, stating, "The deep trenches dug along the roadside for the highway project were left without barricades, railings or warning signs, posing a serious threat to public safety."
The community is calling for a full inquiry into the Katigorah site. They want officials to hold those responsible for the safety failures accountable. Families in the area now demand immediate installation of barriers to prevent more deaths.
