Imphal: Adhikarimayum Sarda Devi, the BJP candidate for the lone Rajya Sabha seat in Manipur, has pledged to advocate for women's welfare and state territorial integrity if she secures a victory. She filed her nomination papers at the Manipur Legislative Assembly Secretariat on June 8, flanked by Chief Minister Y. Khemchand Singh and various party officials.
Sarda Devi, the first woman to lead the BJP in Manipur, emphasized that her tenure would focus on bringing local concerns to the national stage. She pointed to her past efforts in managing relief camps for those impacted by ethnic violence as a foundation for her policy goals. She stated, "We had set up relief camps for women affected by the ethnic violence. If elected, I intend to raise women-related issues in Parliament."
The candidate expressed her gratitude toward Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and party leadership for their support. She stated that her legislative agenda would reflect the needs of her constituents, specifically regarding the safety and future of the state. She added, "As a woman myself, my priorities would be development-related issues for women and working towards women empowerment."
The electoral process continues with the scrutiny of nominations scheduled for June 9. Candidates have until June 11 to withdraw their bids before the vote on June 18. With the BJP and its allies maintaining a strong majority in the legislative assembly, the party expects to hold its position comfortably.
