Imphal: The Bharatiya Janata Party has officially announced its candidates for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, set to take place on June 18. A. Sharda Devi will represent Manipur, while Tai Tagak has been selected for the seat in Arunachal Pradesh.
A. Sharda Devi currently serves as the President of the BJP in Manipur. Her political career spans decades, beginning with her entry into the party in 1995. She previously served as a national secretary and vice-president for the BJP Mahila Morcha and held multiple roles within the Manipur Pradesh Core Committee. Party leadership confirmed her nomination after the BJP Central Election Committee reviewed the state unit recommendations.
In Arunachal Pradesh, 54-year-old Tai Tagak secured the nomination after a competitive process that saw 16 aspirants apply for the seat. Tagak, a long-time member of the RSS, served as the state party president from 2013 to 2015 and acted as an adviser to the Chief Minister. He is also recognized for his work with the Arunachal Shiksha Vikas Samiti. According to the party, "Tagak joined the RSS in 1989 and played a key role in the BJP forming the government in Arunachal Pradesh in 2016."
The upcoming elections will fill vacancies in ten states, including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh. Odisha will also conduct a by-election to the Upper House on the same day. The term for the current Rajya Sabha member from Arunachal Pradesh, Nabam Rebia, concludes on June 23.
