Imphal: Bhumeshwory Devi Huidrom claimed a bronze medal in the women’s 800m race at the Asian U23 Athletics Championships in Ordos, China. The 22-year-old athlete finished with a time of 2:10.20 on July 12. She beat China’s Gejing Zhu by a slim margin of 0.03 seconds. This victory marks a significant achievement for a runner from Northeast India on the international stage.
Uzbekistan’s Jonbibi Hukmova grabbed gold with a 2:08.41 finish. Japan’s Kurumi Sugure took silver at 2:09.42. Huidrom represents the Huidrom Awang Leikai area in Manipur. She started her career in 2017 at the Sports Authority of India center in Takyel, Imphal. She later moved her training to Bhopal after that program closed.
The runner now trains in Bengaluru under Italian coach Claudio Pannozzo at the SAI National Centre of Excellence. Her career includes gold medals at the Indian Grand Prix and the Open Athletics Meet, plus a silver at the 64th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships. She is currently part of the IOCL Project Shakti initiative, which prepares athletes for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Former Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh honored her performance on social media. He praised her “exceptional talent, dedication, and hard work.” He noted that the medal remains a proud moment for Manipur and the entire nation.
