BAKDIL Clarifies Leadership Behind Garo Hills Cashew Success

Shillong: The NGO BAKDIL has issued a clarification regarding a June 8 report that incorrectly credited Fr. Benoy Joseph for the success of cashew farming in the Garo Hills. The organization stated that Fr. Benoy Joseph had no involvement in the region's cashew farming boom.

Instead, BAKDIL identified Fr. Sunny Joseph Mavelil as the primary figure responsible for the revival and development of the local cashew sector. According to the organization, the growth in the industry is the result of a coordinated effort rather than individual work.

The group noted that the cashew value-chain intervention in the region is a collective movement involving farmers, primary cooperatives, community institutions, government support agencies, and technical partners. The NGO emphasized that success in the Garo Hills comes from these collaborative efforts, stating that the project has been a collective movement involving farmers, primary cooperatives, community institutions, government support agencies, and technical partners.
