Shillong: AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal says counterfeit money poses a greater danger to the state than the drug trade. He claims the spread of fake bills proves the government is failing to secure the streets. Ajmal wants the state to hit back hard against anyone peddling contraband or bad cash. He even suggested police use lethal force against hardened criminals.
"Counterfeit currency is an even bigger problem than drugs. Where are these fake notes coming from, and who is circulating them? This is a 100 per cent failure of the government," Ajmal said on Thursday. His comments follow a major seizure of fake notes by police in Guwahati.
Other leaders joined the debate. BJP MLA Manab Deka pointed to Bongalmora as a hub for printing operations. He claims criminals use high-end machines there to cheat the public. Police have already arrested nine people involved in that specific racket.
Assam Minister Biswajit Daimary downplayed the local focus. He insists the crisis stretches far beyond the borders of Assam. He asked the public to work with law enforcement to identify gangs. Police continue to hunt for leads on the source of the notes and possible cross-border ties.
