Guwahati: Assam is spending Rs 550 crore to build a proton therapy center at Guwahati Medical College and Hospital. This move makes GMCH the first state-run facility in India to offer this high-tech cancer treatment. Work starts now. The project should wrap up within three years.

Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah laid out the plan in the 2026-27 state budget. He noted that the technology is a major step forward for local patients. "Proton Therapy is one of the world's most advanced forms of radiation treatment for cancer," Baruah said. It hits tumors with extreme precision. Healthy tissue stays safe.

Patients from across the Northeast currently travel to big metro cities for specialized care. This new center aims to keep that treatment in Assam. It positions the state as a primary hub for oncology. The investment serves as a core pillar of the government healthcare expansion plan.
