Guwahati: Assam wants the crown. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the state aims to become the largest pineapple producer in India. It currently holds the number two spot. The government now plans to climb higher.
Sarma recently sampled fruit from Goalpara, Karbi Anglong, and Cachar. He praised the Cachar variety for its unique tangy taste and efficient farming methods. The Chief Minister posted on X: "The Cachar variant from yesterday stood out for its tangy flavour and a zero-waste circular farming model. We're already India's 2nd largest pineapple producer. We're coming for No. 1."
Pineapple farming sustains thousands of families. These crops act as a primary income source in the Barak Valley and hill regions. State officials are now pushing for better cultivation tools and wider market access. They want to turn raw produce into processed goods to boost earnings for local growers.
By highlighting the Cachar model, the state hopes to push sustainable agriculture. Farmers who cut down on waste keep more money in their pockets. The government drive aims to modernize the sector while keeping traditions alive.
