Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state is on track to achieve a 10 lakh crore economy by 2028. Addressing the legislative assembly, he noted that the state's gross domestic product is projected to reach 8.72 lakh crore by 2026. This reflects a steady annual growth rate of 13 to 15 percent since 2021.

Sarma stated that this progress aligns with the national goal of building a 5 trillion dollar economy. The state's development has been bolstered by significant federal assistance, with the Ministry of Finance providing 5.61 lakh crore in tax devolution and grants between 2014 and 2026. Additionally, Assam received 17,104 crore in interest-free, 50-year loans through the special capital expenditure assistance scheme, which helped fund major infrastructure projects.

In other legislative developments, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Atul Bora introduced the Uniform Civil Code, Assam, Bill, 2026. The assembly is expected to debate and potentially vote on the bill on May 27.
