Guwahati: Assam’s Department of Housing and Urban Affairs ordered a review of a proposed water reservoir in Digboi. The state wants to know if the project site threatens the statue of Dwijesh Chandra Devsarma. Secretary Richand Ahmed issued the directive on June 23, 2026.

Former municipal chairman Bhaskar Jiban Baruah filed the complaint. He claims the reservoir sits too close to the memorial of the former MLA. The statue went up in 2014 to mark Devsarma’s birth centenary. Baruah argues that previous land plans for the water project offer better options.

The town needs better water. The project serves nine municipal wards and recently restarted after a long delay. Officials must now decide if the construction plan keeps the monument intact. Executive Officer Aniruddha Bora promised a fix. He said, "The board would preserve the memorial while continuing work on the water supply project and maintaining the surrounding area."

The technical team has not yet filed an official report. The state government expects a decision on the site soon. Local authorities will determine if the project shifts or stays put.
