Guwahati: Assam recorded a massive 85.96% voter turnout during the single-phase assembly elections on April 9. Millions of citizens headed to the booths across 35 districts. Voters sealed the fates of 722 candidates inside 31,490 polling stations. Over 90% of electors cast ballots in several constituencies, including Dhubri and Nalbari. Urban seats like Dispur saw slightly lower participation near 80%.

The state's 2.50 crore voters included 1.25 crore women and 6.4 lakh first-time participants. Women voters turned out in higher numbers than men, continuing a trend that started in 2021. Political observers remain split on what these numbers mean. Some see a pro-incumbency wave favoring the BJP-led alliance, while others argue the shift signals a desire for change.

Supporters of the ruling party point to the Orunodoi scheme as a key driver for voter support. This initiative provides monthly financial aid to nearly 40 lakh beneficiaries. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma campaigned on themes of peace and infrastructure development. BJP state president Dilip Saikia expects a strong victory, noting, "The NDA will easily cross 75 this year."

The Congress-led opposition disputes this optimism. They cite decade-long anti-incumbency and allegations of corruption against the Chief Minister’s family. Party leader Pawan Khera recently alleged that Sarma’s wife holds foreign assets and multiple passports. These claims triggered legal battles and heated rhetoric on both sides. Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi remained firm in his assessment of the electorate. "The unprecedented voter turnout is in favour of change," Gogoi said.

The Election Commission will announce results for Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry on May 4. This date also marks the final count for several key bye-elections across India. Ahead of the vote, officials conducted a special review to remove non-existent entries from registration lists. This cleanup effort, combined with increased public awareness, helped drive the record-breaking participation.
