Guwahati: Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is leading a 360 crore rupee upgrade for the Assam State Zoo in Guwahati. Work started last year. The project aims to drag the aging facility into the modern era with better animal habitats and visitor areas.

Construction crews have finished nearly 27 percent of the job. Plans include building a high-tech veterinary hospital and a specialized rescue centre. The site will also feature what Sarma claims is the world’s largest bird aviary. New animal enclosures remain a primary focus of the design.

Sarma wants this site to rank among the best in India. He told officials to visit the top zoos nationwide to borrow successful tactics. "Exposure to best practices followed by leading zoos across the country will help shape the redevelopment of the Assam State Zoo into a world-class wildlife facility," Sarma said.

The overhaul seeks to balance conservation goals with better public access. Officials are pushing hard to hit these ambitious targets and solidify the zoo as a national leader in wildlife management.
