Guwahati: Assam Police intercepted a pickup van on National Highway 27 in Barpeta district, uncovering 12 cattle being smuggled under a layer of mango crates. Authorities stopped the vehicle, registered as AS 01 UC 0977, during a routine check on June 11.

Sorbhog Police confirmed that the animals were being moved from West Bengal into Assam. The transport conditions were dire, leading to the death of one cow and leaving the remaining animals in poor health. Local residents expressed outrage over the incident and called for severe penalties for those responsible for the inhumane treatment of the livestock.

A team of veterinary doctors arrived at the Sorbhog Police Station to provide medical care to the survivors. Police have launched an investigation into the smuggling operation to determine the identities of the individuals involved and to confirm if the transport violated state laws. Officials stated that the "condition of several animals had deteriorated due to the manner in which they were transported."
