Guwahati: Assam officials identified multiple erosion hotspots along the Madhura and Barak rivers in Cachar district. Water Resources Minister Sushanta Borgohain confirmed the state plans permanent flood protection works for the Udharbond constituency. The timeline for these repairs remains tied to budget availability.

Borgohain addressed the Assembly on Wednesday after an inquiry from MLA Rajdeep Goala. The minister stated: "Permanent flood and erosion protection schemes have been proposed for these stretches and will be taken up depending on the availability of funds."

Vulnerable sites along the Madhura River include Nayagram, Gossaipur, and the Jagannath Mandir area. Along the Barak River, the state targeted Karatigram, B.C. Gupta, Angarjur, and Gangapara for protection. While permanent fixes await cash, the Water Resources Department already completed temporary repairs at Karatigram and B.C. Gupta to slow the current damage.

Monsoon floods regularly batter these banks. They threaten homes, crops, and local infrastructure. Details regarding the proposed protection projects are now available on the NeVA portal for public review.
