Guwahati: The Assam Assembly passed the Uniform Civil Code Bill on Wednesday, establishing a common legal framework for marriage, divorce, succession, and live-in relationships. The new legislation applies to all citizens regardless of their religious background. While the government celebrated the move, opposition members requested that the bill be sent to a select committee for more detailed review.

Assam is now the third state to approve such a bill, following similar legislative actions in Uttarakhand and Gujarat. Goa also maintains a common civil law, though its framework stems from its historical colonial past. BJP leaders have praised the decision as a milestone for the party, which has long advocated for uniform laws across the country.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the state legislators for supporting the bill. He emphasized that establishing uniform laws remains a core objective of the current administration. BJP president Nitin Nabin also commended the passage, describing the bill as a historic effort to ensure equal rights and social harmony under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
