Guwahati: The Muslim community in Margherita, located in Assam's Tinsukia district, has announced it will abstain from cow sacrifice during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha festival. Leaders from the Margherita Central Muslim Committee shared the decision during a recent press conference, noting that the move aims to foster communal harmony and social unity within the region.
This initiative follows a meeting between the district administration and local religious leaders on May 20. During these discussions, the committee pledged its full support to government regulations and agreed to maintain public peace throughout the holiday. Community representatives emphasized that while Eid-ul-Azha centers on devotion and sacrifice, these observances should not come at the expense of social cohesion or the sentiments of others.
The committee urged mosque leaders and local residents across the sub-division to adhere to these guidelines. Prominent figures including Maulana Rustam Ul Qadri and social worker Taufique Khan led the announcement, framing the decision as a fulfillment of both their faith and their broader social responsibilities. Local organizations and citizens have praised the initiative, describing it as a significant step toward strengthening the long-standing bonds of brotherhood across Assam.
