Guwahati: Raijor Dal president and MLA Akhil Gogoi has launched a sharp critique against the proposed Uniform Civil Code in Assam. During a press conference on May 27, he claimed the legislation would enable the government to interfere in the private lives of citizens by establishing a system of constant monitoring.

Gogoi alleged that the draft law empowers bureaucrats and law enforcement to engage in moral policing regarding personal relationships and individual lifestyles. He argued that this level of state oversight would effectively spy on how residents conduct their daily affairs, creating an environment where peaceful living becomes impossible.

The MLA asserted that these provisions are a direct attack on individual freedoms and stand in clear opposition to constitutional principles. He specifically cited repeated observations from the Supreme Court, which has consistently upheld that the state should not interfere in the private lives of its citizens.

Targeting the BJP-led state administration, Gogoi likened the government's approach to an authoritarian mindset. He demanded that the controversial sections of the bill be withdrawn immediately to protect the rights of the people of Assam.
