Guwahati: Allegations of systemic irregularities at Assam Medical College and Hospital have emerged following claims that a patient was denied benefits under the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme. Local BJP leader Ujjal Kashyap brought the issue to public attention, reporting that a surgeon initially refused to perform an operation using government-provided supplies, forcing the family to purchase medicines independently.

The surgery eventually proceeded on June 12 after the family contacted higher authorities to insist on the use of scheme benefits. However, subsequent complaints allege that the patient received no follow-up visits from the surgeon between June 12 and June 17, despite other patients in the ward receiving regular attention. Family members reported that the doctor later directed them to discharge the patient and address their concerns directly with the Ayushman office.

Kashyap has demanded a formal investigation into the matter, stating, "Kashyap demanded a thorough and impartial inquiry to ascertain the facts and determine whether any violation of medical ethics or government healthcare guidelines had occurred." The controversy has intensified following the circulation of a purported telephonic recording regarding the incident, though the authenticity of the audio remains unverified.

Medical experts emphasize that consistent post-operative care is a critical component of treatment, though protocols can vary by department. As of now, AMCH authorities have not provided an official statement regarding the situation, leaving questions surrounding the implementation of the insurance program at the state institution unresolved.
