Guwahati: Pranjana Baruah and Smritirekha Saikia ditched the hunt for government jobs. They built their own business instead. The two friends from the Kuworitol area of Kaliabor realized that relying on family for cash could not last. They took a six-month fashion design course in Nagaon before renting a room along the National Highway.
They opened SP Ladies Sewing Corner. Armed with just two sewing machines, the pair stitches blouses, mekhela chadors, school uniforms, and custom designs like lehengas and anarkalis. They are now covering their own expenses. Work pays off. The duo avoids the common trap of waiting for state employment, which often forces other educated youths to leave Assam for work elsewhere.
Hard work matters. The women insist that perseverance is the key to success. Baruah and Saikia now plan to grow the shop by teaching tailoring and design to other unemployed women in the region. They aim to show that skill-based entrepreneurship creates a solid path to a secure life. As they noted, "becoming self-reliant has enabled them to meet their own expenses without having to regularly seek financial assistance from their families."
