Guwahati: Assam has achieved a significant public health milestone as its Maternal Mortality Rate dropped to 84. For the first time, this figure sits below the national average of 88. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the achievement on May 26, describing the progress as a deeply emotional moment in his public service career.

When Sarma first took charge of the state health department in 2006, the maternal mortality rate was 480. At that time, bringing the numbers down to current levels seemed nearly impossible. The Chief Minister attributed the sharp decline to the tireless dedication of nurses, doctors, ASHA workers, and various health officials across the region.

Sarma praised the frontline personnel for their silent efforts and commitment to saving lives. He noted that the declining statistics represent countless mothers who returned home to their families safely. The state government views this accomplishment as the result of years of sustained investment in strengthening healthcare services.
