Guwahati: Assam has reached a historic public health milestone as its maternal mortality rate has dropped to 84 per lakh live births. This figure marks the first time the state has fallen below the national average of 88. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighted the dramatic improvement, noting that the rate stood at 480 when he first oversaw the Health Department in 2006.

Sarma credited this success to the dedication of doctors, nurses, and frontline health workers who provided care in both urban centers and remote villages. Health officials believe the decline stems from a combination of better antenatal care, an increase in institutional births, and improved emergency obstetric services.

ASHA workers played a vital role in this transformation by bridging the gap between expectant mothers and medical facilities. Despite the state’s difficult geography and underserved populations, these collective efforts have ensured safer outcomes for mothers across the region.
