Guwahati: Assam legislators crossed party lines Tuesday to pledge one month of their salaries for flood relief. Only the Raijor Dal opted out. Their MLA, Mehboob Muktar, remained silent during the Assembly session.
Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass and Deputy Speaker Habbey Teron will donate their pay. Secretariat staff will also contribute one day of salary. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pijush Hazarika confirmed all BJP members will donate. The lone Trinamool Congress MLA, Sherman Ali, and representatives from AGP and BPF made identical pledges.
Leader of the Opposition Wajed Ali Choudhury stated that Congress MLAs are joining the effort. AIUDF MLA Mazibur Rahman noted his party president, Badruddin Ajmal, already donated significantly. Ajmal previously gave Rs 2 crore and requested a Rs 10,000 crore package from the Centre. Rahman said his party legislators will still contribute their monthly pay.
The BJP is running a separate drive to raise Rs 12 crore for clothing two lakh women and children. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said this effort targets Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat. He stated, "donations of up to Rs 2,000 could be handed over to local BJP MLAs, while larger contributions should be deposited into the Assam BJP's bank account."
Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika promised free distribution of paddy seeds to farmers in Jorhat, Sivasagar, and Charaideo. Supplies reach these areas in four to five days. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal pledged federal cooperation for essential deliveries. The Speaker thanked the members for their support.
