Guwahati: Assam is betting big on bugs. Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah announced Mission Senehjori, a Rs 400-crore plan to turn the state into the world hub for GI-tagged Golden Muga silk. The three-year project runs alongside the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region. It targets a massive payday for the local economy.

The plan hits 2.6 lakh people. Rearers, reelers, weavers, and entrepreneurs stand to gain from improvements across the entire supply chain. The state wants to fix everything from seed production to branding. Baruah said the goal is to "unlock the full economic potential of Assam's world-famous Golden Muga Silk."

Officials will bundle producers into 1,180 Farmer Interest Groups and 30 Farmer Producer Organisations by 2028. This move aims to boost production efficiency and bargaining power. Infrastructure upgrades include a Rs 10 crore Muga Spun Mill in Dhemaji to turn silk waste into yarn. A new Muga Silk Tourism Park is also coming to Dhakuakhana for Rs 8.44 crore.
