Guwahati: Assam is betting big on its signature textile. Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah introduced the Rs 400-crore Mission Senehjori during the 2026-27 State Budget presentation on July 10. The three-year push targets the global market. It will breathe new life into the traditional Muga silk sector.

This initiative spans the entire value chain. It covers everything from host plantations and seed production to final export. The government expects to help 2.6 lakh people. This group includes rearers, reelers, weavers, and local entrepreneurs. The state plans to organize these workers into 1,180 Farmer Interest Groups and 30 Farmer Producer Organisations by 2028.

Infrastructure upgrades are coming soon. The state will build a Rs 10-crore Muga Spun Mill in Dhemaji to turn silk waste into yarn. Officials also earmarked Rs 8.44 crore for a Muga Silk Tourism Park in Dhakuakhana. Baruah stated the mission aims to "unlock the economic potential of Assam's renowned Golden Muga Silk and establish the state as the global hub for authentic Muga silk production, processing and trade."

Officials will use digital tools for GI authentication and tracking. They want to turn local heritage into a premium global brand. The project runs in partnership with the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region.
