Guwahati: Patients in Assam's Sivasagar district faced a major disruption on Saturday when the Namati Ali Ayushman Arogya Mandir failed to provide medical services. The government-run facility, which serves roughly 36 villages, remained without a doctor for the entire day, leaving elderly patients, women, and children to wait for hours in vain.
Many residents traveled from distant locations early in the morning, only to find the doctor's chamber vacant. While a pharmacist attempted to assist some individuals by distributing basic medications, the facility's primary healthcare operations effectively stalled.
Local frustration reached a boiling point as residents reported that the absence of medical personnel has become a recurring issue. A delegation from the All Assam Students' Union visited the site to inspect the situation and criticized the state Health Department for failing to maintain adequate staffing levels. The student group demanded immediate intervention to resolve the shortage, stating that they "criticised the Health Department and demanded immediate steps to address the shortage of medical staff." Community members are now calling on authorities to ensure the region's only government health centre remains operational for those who rely on it for essential care.
