Guwahati: Assam remains under water. The flood death toll climbed to 10 as relentless monsoon rains swamped 16 districts. Official data confirms 362,933 people are currently suffering the effects of the deluge.
Jorhat, Charaideo, Sonitpur, Dibrugarh, Chirang, Udalguri, Biswanath, Golaghat, Cachar, Dhemaji, Tinsukia, Nagaon, Karbi Anglong, Kamrup, Kamrup Metro, and Sivasagar remain under siege. Sivasagar is hardest hit with 157,727 victims. Charaideo and Jorhat report over 104,000 and 50,000 affected respectively. Two people remain missing.
Fatalities mounted quickly. Four died in Jorhat, including two girls, while one person perished in Karbi Anglong. In a separate tragedy in Titabor, two teenagers, 14-year-old Susmita Mardha and Chuniya Pahariya, drowned in the overflow of the Doi Jaan stream. Titabor MLA Dhiraj Gowala described the devastation. "People in Titabor have never experienced floods of this magnitude before. This is an extraordinary natural disaster for the area," Gowala said.
The Indian Army launched Operation Jal Rahat to pull survivors from the wreckage. Four relief columns from the Red Shield Division hit the ground in Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat. They deployed boats, medical teams, and engineering units to evacuate stranded families. Nearly 7,000 people were moved to safety on Sunday.
Infrastructure is failing. Floodwaters swallowed 794 villages across 45 revenue circles. Approximately 19,099 hectares of cropland are ruined. Nearly 389,000 animals are caught in the flood zone. The state set up 101 relief camps housing 45,000 displaced residents.
Rivers are surging. The Brahmaputra is above danger levels at Neamatighat. The Dikhow River at Sivasagar surged past its highest recorded mark. The Burhidihing, Disang, and Dhansiri rivers remain in severe flood status. Officials report 29 roads destroyed and six embankments breached. Cabinet ministers are currently touring the worst sites to monitor the situation under orders from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
