Guwahati: Natural disasters killed 866 people in Assam over the last decade. State government records tabled in the Legislative Assembly confirm floods caused 841 deaths, while landslides claimed 25 lives between 2016 and 2025. It is a grim tally. The data shows 2022 was the state's deadliest year for floods.

Annual death tolls fluctuated wildly during the decade. Fatalities jumped from 64 in 2016 to 160 the following year before plummeting to 45 in 2018. Numbers rose to 101 in 2019 and 124 in 2020, then dropped to just eight in 2021. The flood count peaked at 181 deaths in 2022. The state later reported 18 deaths in 2023, 110 in 2024, and 25 in 2025. Morigaon, Cachar, Nagaon, Barpeta, Dibrugarh, Sonitpur, Golaghat, Darrang, and Kamrup Metro stood out as the hardest-hit districts.

Rain-triggered landslides accounted for 25 additional deaths across the state. The highest number of landslide fatalities occurred in 2020 with 11 deaths. Kamrup Metro suffered the most in this category. Other impacted areas included Karimganj, Cachar, Dima Hasao, Hailakandi, and Goalpara. These areas remain prone to disaster. Government officials stated this reflects the "continued vulnerability of hilly terrain and Barak Valley areas during heavy rainfall."
