Guwahati: Dhubri became the first district in Assam to start the new Viksit Bharat-Rozgar and Livelihood Guarantee Mission on July 2. This initiative hikes guaranteed annual work for rural families from 90 days to 125 days. It replaces the old Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act framework. The state hopes this change will anchor workers at home.
Officials gathered at the Agomani Development Block Office to kick off the program. Assam Cabinet Minister Ashwini Roy Sarkar attended the event to explain the government plan. He said the mission reflects the government's focus on "creating sustainable livelihood opportunities and boosting the rural economy."
Key local figures joined the launch, including Golakganj Co-District Commissioner Yimkum I. Ozukum and Dhubri Zilla Parishad CEO Dhrubajyoti Das. They expect the extra days of work to stabilize household incomes. This shift aims to stop seasonal migration while driving long-term growth across the region.
