Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma marked the anniversary of the 1975 Emergency by labeling it a dark chapter in the nation's history. He claimed the move served only to suppress democratic values and civil liberties across India.

Sarma praised those who stood against the government at the time. He called these people brave warriors who fought to save the democratic process. The Chief Minister shared his thoughts on social media. "We remember that dark chapter in the history of Indian democracy, when in 1975 the Emergency was imposed in an attempt to crush the country's democratic values and civil liberties," he wrote.

The Emergency lasted from June 25, 1975, until March 21, 1977. Officials enacted it under Article 352 of the Constitution. Times were hard. The central government now marks June 25 as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas.

A federal gazette notification recently noted that the period involved a gross abuse of power. The government records show that citizens faced many atrocities and excesses during those two years.
