Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has publicly opposed proposals to allow polygamy when a spouse is ill. Speaking on the matter, he rejected the suggestion by criticizing the Indian National Congress for allegedly supporting the right of a man to remarry if his wife becomes sick.
Sarma described the husband and wife relationship as a divine bond rooted in commitment and care. He argued that a partner's primary responsibility during a time of illness is to provide medical treatment and support rather than seeking a new marriage. He labeled the opposing view as an act of cruelty that would cause significant mental suffering for the ill partner.
The government has officially rejected any moves to permit polygamy without valid legal grounds. Sarma clarified that marital disputes should be handled through the judicial system. He noted that if a spouse is unfaithful, the correct course of action is to obtain a legal divorce decree before pursuing a second marriage.
