Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Announces New Cabinet Portfolios

Shillong: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has distributed portfolios among his newly formed Council of Ministers. The allocations, approved by Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, aim to streamline governance and drive the state development agenda forward.

Sarma remains in charge of several vital departments, including Home and Political Affairs, Power, and Public Works. He also maintains control over Information, Public Relations, and any portfolios not specifically assigned to other members of the cabinet. Following the announcement, the Chief Minister expressed optimism about the team, stating that he is confident the ministers "would work collectively to serve the people of Assam and further accelerate the state’s progress and prosperity."

Key appointments include Jayanta Mallabaruah overseeing Finance, Environment, and Mines, while Ashok Singhal takes charge of Health and Medical Education. Ranoj Pegu retains control over education sectors, and Pijush Hazarika will lead Agriculture and Parliamentary Affairs. Other ministers were assigned critical roles spanning industry, tribal affairs, urban development, and disaster management.

This redistribution occurs three days after the expansion of the Council of Ministers. Sarma previously noted that these assignments followed a rigorous evaluation of administrative needs and individual strengths. The current cabinet includes the Chief Minister and 16 ministers, leaving two seats vacant following the recent electoral victory of the BJP-led NDA.
