Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma offered his best wishes to the state's Tiwa community on July 11. He marked the arrival of the Wanchuwa Festival. This post-harvest celebration honors nature and strengthens local bonds.
Sarma praised the event's cultural significance. "Heartiest greetings to everyone, especially my brothers and sisters of the Tiwa community, on the occasion of Wanchuwa Festival. A beautiful reflection of our region's rich heritage, Wanchuwa is a celebration of a bountiful harvest, community bonding and gratitude to nature," he said.
The Tiwa, or Lalung, people primarily hold these celebrations in the Karbi Anglong region. They wait for a cycle of five to six years to host the festivities. The timeline typically falls between June and August.
Crowds mark the event with traditional music and dance. Participants perform ceremonial rice-pounding and prepare wanrusa. This steamed rice cake serves as an offering to community deities to bring future prosperity. The state government promised to keep supporting these unique tribal customs through its Indigenous and Tribal Faith and Culture Department.
