Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has officially welcomed the central government’s decision to establish a high-level committee focused on investigating demographic changes across India. Led by retired Supreme Court Justice Prakash Prabhakar Naolekar, the panel aims to assess how illegal immigration and other unnatural factors are altering the national landscape.

Sarma described the initiative as a decisive step toward safeguarding national security. He noted that the challenges posed by shifting demographics extend beyond any single state, directly impacting cultural identity and social stability. The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the committee will provide concrete solutions to protect indigenous rights, tribal communities, and the country's cultural heritage.

The formation of this committee follows concerns previously raised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who highlighted how illegal infiltration and demographic instability in border regions could pose long-term risks to the country. Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the panel, emphasizing that these trends represent a significant security challenge. Sarma stated that the work of this committee is expected to strengthen national defenses and provide critical insights into the concerns of border populations.
