Guwahati: Assam wiped out a massive haul of illegal narcotics on July 12. The state government set fire to drugs worth Rs 472.51 crore during a public destruction event. This operation marks a major win in the state crackdown on traffickers. Officials moved quickly to burn the stash so it cannot hit the streets again.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma oversaw the work. Ministers Jayanta Malla Baruah and Narayan Deka joined him on the scene. The pile was huge. It contained 58.877 kg of heroin, nearly 38,000 kg of ganja, and over 1.9 million Yaba tablets. Other items burned included morphine, opium, cocaine, poppy straw, and thousands of cough syrup bottles.
The state aims to kill the drug trade for good. "The disposal programme reflects Assam's continued commitment to eliminating the menace of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances," the government stated. Scientists handled the destruction to ensure everything went up in smoke. Authorities believe this hard line will keep the state clean and keep poison out of local hands.
