Guwahati: Assam is hiring. Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah laid out a massive 2026-27 state budget this Thursday. It targets the creation of 33,240 healthcare roles. The state also wants a medical college in every single district.

New campuses will rise in Goalpara, Hailakandi, Hojai, and Bajali. This brings the planned total to 28 colleges. Assam currently runs 14, with another 10 under construction. Officials hope to make specialized care local for everyone.

The plan pushes doctors into the smallest clinics. Every Health Sub-Centre will soon host an MBBS doctor. They will get help from nurses, pharmacists, and lab techs. Baruah touted the initiative as a first in India. "No other state has introduced such a model for Health Sub-Centres," he said.

Hiring lists include 6,814 doctors and nearly 11,000 staff nurses. Pharmacists and lab technicians also make the cut. These workers will staff facilities from village clinics to big hospitals. The government aims to overhaul the system from the ground up.
