Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party on May 26 accused the Assam Congress of abandoning indigenous interests in favor of Bengali-origin migrant Muslims. BJP spokesperson Kishore Upadhyay addressed a press conference in Guwahati, arguing that recent internal appointments reflect an ideological shift within the state opposition. He claimed the party now prioritizes the interests of a migrant Muslim population over the majority indigenous community.
Upadhyay criticized the selection of the new Congress Legislative Party leader, alleging the politician changed his surname for political gain and previously held ties to the All Assam Minority Students Union. He contended that today’s Congress leaders are continuing a historical trend that undermined nationalist ideals and altered the state’s political landscape.
During the briefing, the BJP also voiced support for the state government's plan to introduce the Uniform Civil Code Bill. Upadhyay described the move as a fulfillment of pre-election promises made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He stated that the proposed legislation, which references Supreme Court rulings and the Constitution, will help strengthen the national democratic framework.
The spokesperson also used the platform to highlight the achievements of the central NDA government over the past 12 years. He specifically pointed to the abrogation of Article 370, the implementation of GST, and various infrastructure and social welfare programs as key milestones under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
