Guwahati: Assam has become the third state in India to pass a Uniform Civil Code bill, following similar legislative actions in Uttarakhand and Gujarat. Silchar BJP MLA Rajdeep Roy described the May 27 vote as a historic milestone for the state, emphasizing that the new legislation reflects long-standing ideological goals held by the BJP and its predecessor, the Jan Sangh, since 1967.
Roy defended the necessity of the law by pointing to Assam's significant demographic diversity, noting that the state is home to a minority population of approximately 34 to 35 percent. He dismissed claims that the legislation unfairly targets any specific religious group, asserting that the text of the bill contains no language directed against Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, or Christianity. He characterized such criticism as unfounded and rooted in outdated political thinking.
The bill passed through a voice vote in the legislative assembly amidst vocal opposition. Critics of the measure had demanded that the proposal be sent to a select committee for more extensive review before moving forward. Addressing these concerns, Roy confirmed that the bill will face further constitutional scrutiny as it moves toward final implementation. The legislation must now receive Presidential assent before it can officially take effect.
