Guwahati: Authorities in Assam have issued a precautionary alert following a steady rise in water levels at the Kopili Reservoir in the Dima Hasao district. Persistent rainfall in the Khandong catchment area has forced officials to prepare for the release of water to ensure the dam remains within safe operating limits.

The spillway gates at the Khandong dam could be opened in stages beginning on the night of June 18. According to an official communication, "details regarding the volume of water released and the number of gates opened would be communicated periodically whenever gate operations are carried out."

Local officials are coordinating with residents living along the banks of the Kopili River and downstream areas to ensure safety. The administration has advised the public to exercise caution when near the river and to keep livestock away from the waterbanks. Residents in low-lying and vulnerable areas are expected to remain vigilant as the situation develops.

Simultaneously, the Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited is overseeing the first-time filling of the reservoir for the Lower Kopili Hydro Electric Project at Longku. The amount of water moving downstream from this project will depend on how the dam gates are managed during this process.
