Guwahati: The Assam Legislative Assembly passed the Uniform Civil Code Bill on Wednesday, creating a unified legal framework for marriage, divorce, succession, and live-in relationships. The new law applies to all citizens in the state, regardless of their religious background.

Passage of the bill occurred despite resistance from opposition members, who argued that the legislation required more thorough examination. These lawmakers pushed for the bill to be sent to a select committee for further study and broader consultation before moving toward a final vote.

By enacting this measure, Assam joins Uttarakhand and Gujarat as the latest states to implement a Uniform Civil Code. Goa remains a unique case, as it has operated under a single civil law system since the period of Portuguese colonial rule.

Government officials stated the move is intended to ensure consistency in civil matters across the population. Meanwhile, critics continue to debate the impact such a standardized approach will have on the diverse social and religious practices present within the state.
