Guwahati: The 16th Assam Legislative Assembly concluded its inaugural five-day session on Wednesday, May 27. The proceedings marked a significant milestone with the passage of the Uniform Civil Code, Assam, Bill 2026. This legislation was a primary focus of the assembly sitting.

Speaker Ranjeet Kumar Dass oversaw the session after being elected to the position following the oath-taking ceremonies for newly appointed legislators. The assembly began under the guidance of pro-tem Speaker Chandra Mohan Patowary. On the second day, Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya delivered an address to the members of the house.

Beyond the new civil code, lawmakers approved a government resolution demanding the swift implementation of a 33 percent quota for women in both Parliament and state legislatures. This measure is intended to take effect following the conclusion of the delimitation process. Before adjourning the assembly sine die, Speaker Dass noted that the session successfully addressed several vital government priorities.
