Assam Artistes Honoured with National Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards

Guwahati: Eleven artistes from Assam have been selected to receive the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Awards and the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar for 2024 and 2025. These national recognitions highlight the state’s significant contributions to performing arts, including Sattriya dance, traditional music, theatre, and acting.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated the recipients, emphasizing the government's commitment to protecting the state's heritage. In a social media post, he stated: "As we accelerate Assam's development journey, we remain equally committed to preserving and promoting our rich virasat of Sattriya, folk traditions, theatre and music, for our cultural roots define who we are."

The Sangeet Natak Akademi Award recipients include Prema Oja Barbayan, Bipul Chandra Das, Chetana Das, Mallika Kandali, and Bhaskar Jyoti Oja. These artistes have been recognized for their excellence across disciplines such as acting, Kathak, and Sattriya performance.

The Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar, which honors young talent, was awarded to Minakshi Medhi, Dilip Hira, Bidyut Kumar Nath, Niranjan Saikia Borbayan, Debajit Saikia, and Hirak Jyoti Sarma. Their work spans folk music, theatre direction, Khol percussion, and Tokari Geet. The awards are considered among India's highest honors for the arts and underscore the vital role Assam plays in the nation's diverse cultural landscape.
