Guwahati: President Droupadi Murmu awarded veteran Assamese performer Chetana Das the 2025 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award on Thursday. The ceremony kicked off at 11.30 am inside Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. It honored excellence across Indian performing arts. Das earned her prize in the Theatre-Acting category.
She joins a national list of 2025 acting honorees including Suresh Kumar Hazzu and Makhan Lal Saraf. The award celebrates her long career in Assamese film and stage. Born in Shillong, Das launched her career with the play Sunit Konwori by Jyoti Prasad Agarwala. Audiences know her for sharp comedic timing and deep roots in theatre. The Sangeet Natak Akademi General Council picked the winners during a meeting held in New Delhi from March 22 to 26. This announcement finally arrived in June.
Three artists from Assam claimed 2025 awards. Along with Das, the list includes Sattriya exponent Mallika Kandali and Bhaskar Jyoti Oja. The academy honors these individuals for "sustained excellence in the performing arts." Each recipient walks away with a Tamrapatra, an Angavastram, and Rs 1 lakh.
