Guwahati: Assam has reached a major public health milestone as its Maternal Mortality Rate dropped to 84. This figure marks the first time the state has fallen below the national average of 88. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the achievement on May 26, describing it as one of the most significant moments of his career.

When Sarma first took charge of the state health department in 2006, the maternal mortality rate was 480. He noted that the goal of reducing this number seemed nearly impossible to achieve at the time. The current success is the result of years of consistent effort to strengthen healthcare services across the region.

The Chief Minister attributed the progress to the dedicated work of doctors, nurses, ASHA workers, and frontline health officials. He praised these staff members for their commitment and tireless labor, noting that their work has ensured countless mothers returned home safely to their families.
