Itanagar: A significant milestone for the proposed Siang Upper Multipurpose Project was reached on Thursday as 110 households from Geku signed a Memorandum of Understanding. The agreement formalizes community support for the project's Pre-Feasibility Report, clearing a path for the development of the 11,000 MW mega-dam in Arunachal Pradesh.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu praised the local families for their decision, noting that their support signals a commitment to regional progress. He highlighted that the project serves broader goals than just energy generation, acting as a crucial safeguard for the Siang River and the people living along its banks. Khandu noted that the infrastructure is designed to protect against potential threats caused by sudden or unregulated water releases from across the northern border.

Reflecting on the importance of the agreement, the Chief Minister said, "Every citizen who supports a project of national importance is a partner in nation-building." He emphasized that the initiative will play a key role in flood moderation and long-term water security for the region.

The Chief Minister recognized the collective effort required to secure this consensus. He expressed gratitude to Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, Adviser to the Minister in Charge of Hydropower Development Ninong Ering, and Mariyang-Geku MLA Oni Panyang. He also acknowledged the work of local elders and community leaders who facilitated the discussions necessary to reach this agreement.
